The Wiggles Magical Adventure -
|
Amazon.com Grab your crunchy, munchy honey cakes: it's time for a feature-length movie from Australia's fab four, the Wiggles! Released Down Under in 1997 as The Wiggles Movie, this charming show gives fans a wholesome, 70-minute fix from the singing group's pre-Disney Channel years. Today is Dorothy the Dinosaur's birthday, and the Wiggles can't wait to surprise her. Alas, sweet selfless Dorothy thinks they have forgotten. As the four tuneful Aussies bop from Henry's kaleidoscopic underwater pad to Wags the Dog's house and beyond, Dorothy keeps busy by teaching a struggling magician how to believe in himself. Throughout the story, 16 song-and-dance numbers easily mesh with the plot. Lightweight action swirls to a happy ending as magician Wally the Great lives up to his name and Dorothy's party restores her faith in friendship. While 3- to 8-year-olds should enjoy the whole show, wiggly toddlers might lose track. --Liane Thomas |

Yule Be Wiggling
|
The Wiggles, that bee-boppin', harmonizing Australian quartet, dishes up another grand helping of Christmas cheer for 1- to 6-year-olds in Yule Be Wiggling. It's a bountiful romp sure to inspire 45 minutes of gleeful twisting, shaking, tapping, rocking, and swaying. Singers Greg, Anthony, Murray, and Jeff will treat viewers to an international buffet of 16 fresh and traditional holiday tunes, including "Murray's Christmas Samba," "Curoo Curoo," "The Christmas Polka," and "Jingle Bells." Most of the fun happens on their colorful performance stage; but Captain Feathersword's antics, a dizzying computer-animated number ("Jimmy the Elf"), and the occasional home video nicely enhance the dance routines. At times, the extended Wiggles cast and the whirlwind action give Yule Be Wiggling the feel of an overstuffed Christmas stocking. But the bounty is wholesome and heartily shared. Only a Scrooge could begrudge the pure joy that effuses from the Wiggles or from the many kids who dearly love this award-winning group's performances. --Liane Thomas |

Wiggly Safari
|
G'day from the Australia Zoo, where the Wiggles get wild with Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin. It's a Wiggly Safari: 55 jaw-snappin', kookaburra-hootin', dolphin-splashin' minutes of grand adventure. A big ham himself, Irwin meshes naturally with the tuneful quartet as they sing, dance, and share factual tidbits about cockatoos, crocodiles, emus, and more. Colors pop off the screen as Dorothy, Captain Feathersword, and little dancers cavort through the zoo. Packed with 16 snappy tunes, this particular Wiggles collection revs up the tempo from earlier titles like Wiggle Time and Toot! Toot! Could this lush outdoor setting, where songs like "Dingo Tango" and "Cocky Want a Cracker" sizzle in the sunshine, be responsible for inspiring this ultra-imaginative play list? Or perhaps Irwin's invigorating presence stimulated the fresh, lively feel of this exceptional show. Regardless, Wiggles fans from ages 1 to 8 will surely delight in this musical tour of the Australia Zoo. --Liane Thomas 4 1/2 of 5 stars on Amazon.com |
Wiggles Play Time
|
For their seventh release, the Australian singing troupe demonstrates more of their talents. This collection is a compilation of three episodes from Wiggles Television, a half-hour kids show that airs in Australia. Along with 13 songs (half of which have been on earlier video releases), the Wiggles appear in skits reminiscent of Barney. These segments may pose dubious educational value, but are good, clean, wiggly fun. Typical subjects include Dorothy the Dinosaur pulling a prank on Captain Feathersword, Anthony struggling with magic tricks that Greg performs so easily, and Jeff and Murray finding surprises in the sky. We journey back to when the Wiggles were kids or even farther: see the Wiggles as cavemen! The use of computer graphics and outdoor locations are an improvement over the usual studio look of earlier collections, but those who just want the Wiggles' music will find their patience tried (at 65 minutes, this collection is nearly twice as long as earlier releases with the same numbers of songs). The 2- to 7-year-old fans should enjoy seeing their favorite color-clad singers in a new environment, and the troupe has a winning presence whether singing or not. --Doug Thomas |

Toot Toot!
|
A beloved children's band from Australia, The Wiggles
are four music-making guys: Jeff, Murray, Greg, and Anthony.
When the Big Red Car (a whimsical dune buggy) won't start, or
as the Wiggles say, no "Chugga, Cugga, Toot, Toot!,"
it's an ideal time to sing and dance. There are songs about walking
across the street and eating foods that are healthy as well as
some that are more familiar like "Head, Shoulder, Knees,
and Toes" and "Look Both Ways." The lads stir
up a whole lot of energy with the help of their costumed friends,
including Wags the Dog, Officer Beaples, Dorothy the Dinosaur,
Captain FeatherSword, and Zardo Zap. Their videos have a retro
'60s feel, very upbeat and fun. It's easy to see why they are
so popular in the land down under. Ages 3 to 6. --Peggy Maltby-Etra

Let's Wiggle
|
The Wiggles are fast becoming the 2- to 6-year-old crowd's answer to the Fab Four in their native Australia, inciting ants-in-the-pants squirming, squeals of delight, and worshipful sing-alongs all across the nation. With their eponymous TV show, they're poised to widen the Wigglemania. On Let's Wiggle, Anthony Field (the blue-shirted Wiggle), Murray Cook (the red-shirted one), Greg Page (always in yellow), and Jeff Fatt (perennially purple) and their costumed pals Dorothy the Dinosaur, Captain Feathersword, Henry the Octopus, and Wags the Dog settle in for some serious silliness on such songs as "Fly Through the Air," "I Look in the Mirror," and "Little Brown Ant." Simple musical arrangements and easy-to-grasp themes ("I love it when it rains / And I lie in bed at night / I listen to it patter" is the extent of one lyric) pave the way for attentive listening. The Wiggles also earn a nod in the credibility category: 13 of this album's songs were written by group members (the rest, like "Sing a Song of Polly" and "Bound for South Australia" are traditional songs), and they even handle their own guitars. Overall, despite what sometimes feels like overkill on the Australia angle (lots of kangaroos and kookaburras scamper through these songs), parents would be hard-pressed to find a better bunch of guys for their preschoolers to wiggle with. --Tammy La Gorce |
Yummy Yummy
|
Finally, a boy band with some substance: Australia's Wiggles, a four-bloke outfit complete with an entourage of costumed characters, several videos, and their own TV show, ought to have no problem worming their way into the CD collections of 2- to 6-year-olds. Yummy Yummy, a 24-track album brimming with danceable, singable, and sometimes nonsensical songs, is largely about food, numbers, and animals. Most appealing about the group--Greg Page (lead vocalist and the Wiggle in yellow), Murray Cook (guitarist and red-shirted Wiggle), Anthony Field (another guitarist, but in blue), and Jeff Fatt (a purple-skivvied backing vocalist)--is its unabashed goofiness and pluck. In "Shake Your Sillies Out," for example, you get the feeling that, in a studio somewhere, these guys actually are shaking their sillies out, nodding their naughties out, clapping their crazies out, jumping their jiggles out, and wibbling their wobbles away. "Fruit Salad," "Hot Potato," and "Crunchy Munchy Honey Cakes" also are recipes for fun. But not to worry--"The Monkey Dance," "Walk," and "Come On Let's Jump" eliminate the threat of food-induced listener lethargy. Aside from the songs themselves, another yummy-yummy aspect of this album (and their Let's Wiggle) is its track lengths. While the "Numbers Joke" lasts only 11 seconds, the instrumental "The Chase," the record's longest number, weighs in at 4 minutes--no demands are being made on short attention spans here. --Tammy La Gorce |
Wiggle Time

The Wiggles are Australia's hottest children's entertainment and it's easy to see why. This 40-minute video is packed with 16 fun songs that make children want to dance and, yes, wiggle. Greg Page, the main vocalist, has a pleasing, folksy voice reminiscent of Canada's Raffi. Murray Cook and Anthony Field accompany on guitar, Jeff Fatt accompanies on accordion and keyboard, and all three dance, wiggle, and teach kids song-specific movements and lyrics. The songs themselves have imaginative lyrics and catchy melodies, a fact that hints at Anthony, Murray, and Greg's backgrounds in early childhood education. Costarring with this foursome are four lovable, costumed characters: Dorothy the Dinosaur, Captain Feathersword, Henry the Octopus, and Wags the Dog. The majority of the video features Greg, Murray, Anthony, and Jeff on uncluttered sets with simple background props that set the mood without distracting viewers from the musical experience. The latter portion of the video features several live performances ("Wags the Dog," "Five Little Ducks," "Wiggly Medley") from The Wiggles Big Show. The tour brought the foursome to America in 1999. This award-winning group from Australia provides a fun, interactive musical experience for kids ages 1 to 6. --Tami Horiuchi |

Amazon.com For the non-Australians out there, the Wiggles are a quartet of male songbirds reminiscent of the Monkees, but aimed at the Barney-watching set. The Down Under foursome sings about mashed bananas and hot potatoes, dances with the energy of fitness instructors, and makes mild attempts at being educational. (Three of the four met while studying early childhood education.) Their stab at multiculturalism results in the Jewish song "Havenu Shalom Alachem." Joining them are a big green dinosaur named Dorothy (seem familiar?), Henry the giant purple octopus, Wags the Dog, and a man in a pirate suit called Captain Feathersword. The songs are catchy, the dancing vigorous, and the outfits colorful approximations of the uniforms worn by the original crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise. A couple of the haircuts look like they might have been acquired on the spaceship as well. The 15-song video runs 33 minutes long and claims to be appropriate for ages 1-8, but will most likely appeal to preschoolers and kindergartners. --Kimberly Heinrichs |
Wake up Jeff

Here's the third toe-tapping collection of songs from the Australian kids' group the Wiggles. Quickly described as the Monkees for the Barney set, these popular singers will keep your little ones moving about with their collection of original songs and standards. It's unfortunate the group that packed in audiences in its 1999-2000 tour of America only has two songs recorded in concert; the bulk of the 15 songs are done on sets with plenty of youngsters sharing the stage with the rainbow-colored quartet. Whether running around the beach ("Having Fun at the Beach") or doing a little "Feet of Flames"-lite ("Bucket of Dew"), the Wiggles' infectious brand of bright, energetic numbers, combined with visits from sidekicks Wags the Dog and Captain Feathersword, makes for sunny entertainment. --Doug Thomas |
